Like many adults with lifelong occasional acne I was intrigued when the FDA approved heat shock treament devices since they offered freedom from ointments and pills and might actually be more effective. This intrigue turned to dismay when I saw that the Zeno and Thermaclear units were pricey and Zeno in particular seemed to have a dodgy buy-new-cartridges model. Since the heat shock principle is easy enough I thought this Pretika device might actually let me test whether it really worked. In particular I wanted to test it without all the salicylic acid scrubs and moisturizers that are for some reason included (i.e., if the device actually works, why do you need all those other agents and isn’t using them concealing — in Public Health speak confounding — whether the device itself is doing anything?). I didn’t find the heat too painful but remember you are pressing a hot object against an inflamed pimple. I did find it time consuming: if you have 5 areas you want to treat, expect to blow about 20 minutes so it can’t be a morning off to work regimen. The big issue however is that I didn’t find it relieved any spot of my acne. Over the course of my trying it out I used it on pimples, cystic areas, a boil, and white heads (that last group should not have worked anyway since they were not inflamed) on my face, chest, and back. I sometimes felt some moderate pain relief right afterwards but the acne proceeded to develop like it always does and didn’t seem to be slowed down at all.
The biggest defect here is the lack of a money back guarantee. I’d also note that the device can be quite hard to administer to some areas (e.g., precisely positioning it for three minutes against areas on the back that are hard to reach is impossible). The more expensive units do come wiht a guarantee but I am not sold on the technology.
