Adult Acne – Getting Rid of It!!!

If you were part of the majority of people that were unlucky to be plagued with teen acne, just think of all the snickers, jests and humiliation you had to go through, then it easier for you to understand why most adult acne sufferers go through a lot of hassles to remove adult acne from their lives. We both know that adult acne is not a terminal disease (you can’t die from having it, I guess you knew that uhhh?). The major thing acne gives us are ugly scars and sometimes they could be really ugly, like mine was at a certain time.

Most of we adults afflicted with acne are usually on the look out for the magical cure that would gives us the fresh and smooth face or skin we had when we were eleven years old. Before we go on a wild goose chase looking for the magical acne medication that would rid us of adult acne lets understand why and how these little annoying monsters grow on our faces.

Why do so many adults still have acne?

It seems from all the amount spent on all those expensive research they still tell us the same thing that we were have all read in encyclopedias, the major cause of adult acne always has something to do with our hormones running wild and also genetics (my dad had a very bad case of acne when he was younger, more severe than mine was). The genetics part simply means that your biological family history has a large chunk of the blame of why you are suffering from adult acne. But aside those there are some other factors that are responsible for worsening your acne condition, some of them include:

*Side effects from some drugs – (such as corticosteroids, androgenic steroids, and lithium)

*Picking at or squeezing at the pimples

    *Harsh scrubbing of the skin

*Oil based cosmetic products – (I guess you know this one already)

    *Stress, illness or exhaustion

    *Heat and moisture

*Diet has a some amount of influence on acne – (and please eating chocolate does not cause acne, where the heck did you hear that from)

    *Pregnancy

    *Menstruation

    *Menopause

How does Adult Acne form on the Skin?

The formation of adult acne as we all know has something to do with sebum, follicle and all those big words that I read in some 21 inches thick encyclopedia. In simple words it is formed when oil (also know as sebum) that is produced underneath the skin surface is blocked from reaching the skin surface where it always flows to, through a hair-containing canal called a “follicle”.

The follicle wall sheds cells often and the canal is used to remove dead cells, which sort of become sticky and block the opening as they attempt to leave the follicle. The blockage results in increased bacteria growth in the follicle, which turns the trapped sebum into a very irritating substance and results in an inflammation that is widely known as acne.

    ]]>

Pheww!!! All that explanation reminds me of high school biology (so painfully boring to me).

In one sentence on how acne forms it is simply put as “Dead skin cells clog the pores, and bacteria cause inflammation which results in acne on the skin”.

Although so many adults like you have tried many acne medications and cosmetics to combat acne, we tend to wonder why they seem not to get rid of the problem once and for all but still they re-occur. It seems that acne forms when one or more of these conditions occurs:

    *A blockage in the follicle

*There is an over production of sebum (oil)

*Increased bacteria growth within the hair follicle.

Researchers have found out that the hormone responsible for acne, which is called “testosterone”. Yes you have heard of it before it is the male hormone (it is found in both males and females but it is produced in high levels in males). Testosterone is responsible for increasing production of sebum (oil), which results in more pimples. Since testosterone is an androgen and is more in males than females, this explains why men tend to have more severe cases of acne than women (at least that explains why I used to have more pimples on my face than my elder sister although she started having pimples on her face before I started having mine).

Adult acne occurs as visible bumps on the surface of the skin usually on the face, although body acne is also common. Adult Acne is seen as pus-filled blisters; small reddish bumps, ugly looking thick red skin on the nose, cheeks and forehead, and small reddish blood vessels all seen on the skin surface. Acne outbreaks usually occur on the face, neck, chest, and shoulders and back. A highbrow term for adult acne is “acne

An anti aging treatment that also treats adult acne? No Way!

    Article by Lisa Dankin

You don’t have to be a teenager to suffer from acne. And, as any acne sufferer will tell you, there is nothing more crippling to self-confidence than acne and acne scarring.

There is a plethora of acne treatments available now, but let’s back up a little and find out what really causes acne and what treatments for acne and acne scarring actually work.

Acne vulgaris is a common skin disease characterised by the appearance of inflamed pimples, cysts and pustules on the skin, usually on the face, back and chest.

Some skin care professionals and dermatologists try and make a distinction between hormonal acne or cystic acne, but in truth, all acne is caused by a number factors, including hormones, bacteria and blocked pores.

Acne affects areas of the skin with the most sebum-producing pores. Generally, acne sufferers produce excess oil and rapidly shed skin cells, and as the upper layers of the skin shed, the skin cells get trapped by the excess sebum, blocking the pore and causing an infection, which then spreads.

The reason acne affects mostly adolescents is because of hormonal changes and because the skin cells shed more rapidly during this time.

So is there anything acne sufferers can do to get clear skin, and do all those acne creams and acne cures actually do anything?

There are a number of new acne treatments available now, and also a number of new treatments to get rid of acne scars.

Light therapy, available at good skin clinics, is a great acne treatment and also treats mild acne scarring, such as surface marks or pigmentation left behind by acne. Wavelengths of light treat acne by increasing circulation and the supply of oxygen in the skin, speeding up the natural regeneration and healing process right down to the dermis.

Blue light is actually used to treat acne, as it kills bacteria in the deep layers of the skin, where a pustule originates. Other light wavelengths are then used to increase collagen synthesis, cellular growth and connective tissue, helping to naturally heal mild surface acne hyperpigmentation marks/scars.

Acne sufferers should also know – microdermabrasion should never be used as an acne treatment. Microdermabrasion is terrible for acne, as it bursts a pustule and then spreads the infection around your face.

The best way to treat block pores is by using ultrasonic. This pimple treatment uses sonic vibrations, which oscillate thousands of times per second, to lift dead skin cells, excess sebum and blackheads, and improve circulation, for faster healing.

It also helps acne skin care to penetrate more deeply into the skin, so it is more effective.

And what about all that acne and pimple cream advertised today – does any of it work?

Unfortunately, most of these mass consumer skin care companies try and treat acne by drying out the skin.

Latest research shows this approach is all wrong. By trying to dry out the oil, you are just prompting the skin to produce more oil to compensate.

And by using acne treatments that are choc-full of chemicals, you are damaging the skin’s epidermal barrier, which is crucial to the healthy functioning of our skin.

A damaged epidermal barrier causes more skin inflammation, which makes acne worse. A good acne treatment will contain only natural, chemical-free ingredients and will restore and protect the epidermal barrier – for normalised oil production and a reduction in inflammation and irritation.

That’s the acne taken care of, so how do we get rid of Acne scars?

For mild surface pimple scars or marks – that is, scars that have not reached the dermis – a treatment to stimulate collagen and elastin production in the skin will improve the appearance of these marks quite quickly. Light therapy, natural peels and medical-grade skin care will do this.

But despite claims to the contrary, nothing can heal deep, pitted scars that have reached the dermis. This is because the dermis can never be healed once it is torn, not even with acne laser treatments. For these very deep scars, injectable fillers will temporarily improve their appearance, and a good collagen cream will reduce redness.

Adult Acne – How To Deal With It

We are all rather familiar with acne, we either had it, know someone who had it or are currently suffering with it. Acne affects nearly 40 million people in the United States alone. It can start anytime between the ages of 12 and 25 and when it hits, well it hits with a vengeance. A growing number of adult women in their twenties and thirties are getting adult acne, even if they never suffered with acne before. The problem with acne is that there is no known cure.

Yes we are bombarded all over the place to buy this “miracle cure” and try this “amazing product” and so often a person who is afflicted with this skin problem will hope and pray that this will be the answer that they are looking for. Just this one time this is going to be the one thing that actually does work. Then because it proves not to be the “miracle cure” they were promised they end up frustrated and disappointed.

So how does one deal with acne? More particularly how does one deal with adult acne? Well, to just give up and resign oneself to the supposed inevitable is not the answer either. You see adult acne is much like being over weight in that you don’t feel good about yourself; your self esteem takes a major knock and you are convinced that when people look at you they do not see YOU but are rather focused on just the area that is riddled with acne. You hate going out in public, you do not want people to look at you because you hate looking at yourself. I know this because I have been there.

Adult acne is embarrassing. It is one thing if you were a teenager because society seems to be more accepting; it is what almost the “norm” is for teenagers. People sympathize and “tut tut” it away as just a natural process of life. I’m not taking away for one moment what teenagers go through (they have “strange” hormones to deal with on top of it all) but there seems to be a stigma attached to adult acne. People just look at you differently.

There seems to be this misconception that if you suffer from adult acne you don’t wash your face and you must be dirty. Just like in the case of someone who is overweight people don’t sit back and think that it may most likely be due to hormonal changes and/ or sometimes it may just be hereditary. It seems to be in people’s nature to assume the worse.

Acne doesn’t just lead to physical scars (which are really depressing and more damaging to the psyche) but more concerning it leads to emotional scarring. Well your choices in dealing with adult acne can be put into two categories. You can “roll over and just accept” that this is your lot in life or you can become active, take charge and find ways to help the situation. Acne may not be curable but it can be controlled and eventually you may even grow out of it.

Let’s take a quick look at what acne is and once we understand how it comes about we can look at how to deal with it. Acne is generally characterized by black heads, white heads, red bumps (also known as blind pimples) and in some cases scarring. Acne is the result of overactive oil glands at the base of the hair follicles that become blocked or inflamed. It may appear anywhere on the body but it tends to be primarily on the face.

There are different forms of acne; mild inflammatory acne, moderate to severe inflammatory acne and severe acne. The problem with acne treatments is that what works for one person may not work for the next. Due to how severe your acne may be you will need to find out which is the best course of action for you. This is best done seeking the advice of your health practitioner or a dermatologist. However you can do a few things to help yourself.

    ]]>

As tempting as it may be DO NOT SQUEEZE OR PICK AT YOUR FACE. It may be tempting and you may just want to get rid all the spots and you think that by squeezing them all out you will be rid of it once and for all. Well if only it was that simple. It is not. The pus (and thus the germs) spreads across your face causing you more acne, or you just end up pushing the pus deeper into your skin causing more of an infection. In some cases you are left with scars. Scaring brings on a whole different level of anxiety and depression.

Do not spend too much time in the sun. There seems to be this myth that the sun will “cure” your acne. The hope seems to be that it will dry up the oily glands. But how will it when the follicles are blocked? You see the sun damages your follicular walls causing further blockage and in turn more acne. The sunlight also produces free radicals in the skin which diminishes the skins ability to heal.

There has been no scientific evidence that has proven that acne and diet are related. I have read various reports saying that acne and diet are related and some say that there is no relation whatsoever. So not affirmed either way but cut down on
